Former South African President Mandela is about to turn 90 on July 18, 2009.

Bulgaria's President, Georgi Parvanov, has awarded the former South African President, Nelson Mandela, with the highest Bulgarian state order.

The award was presented by Bulgaria's Ambassador to South Africa, Volodya Neykov, to Achmat Dangor, Director of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The world known anti-apartheid activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Mandela is awarded the Bulgarian order for his international activity in support of human rights and freedoms on the occasion of his 90th birthday, which is on July 18.

Mandela could not receive the Bulgarian medal in person because of his bad health, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry announced.
